Planning for the redevelopment is in the very early stages with an initial artist impression concept revealed today, to bring to life Council’s vision for the new look and feel of this very important project before Council commences community consultation.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said: “We are very excited to see what will happen in this space to make sure that the new Civic Centre is functional and meets the needs of both Council and the community.
“Our Council has a vision that will guide community consultation to ensure that the new building incorporates recognition of the Larrakia people, promotion of Darwin’s history, public access and community spaces and opportunities to enhance community participation in Council activities.
“This significant redevelopment is central to City of Darwin’s focus on economic recovery, job creation, enhancement and revitalisation of Darwin’s City Centre.
“In the near future, Council will be talking to the community about what they would like to see in the public access and community spaces that will make up this redevelopment.”
The new Darwin Civic Centre is anticipated to encompass a ceremonial Town Hall for weddings and official functions like Citizenship Ceremonies, new offices, Council Chambers and offer contemporary public spaces for exhibitions and community events, with an anticipated off-street parking for around 200 vehicles.
The project will be funded by Council’s Sale of Land Reserve and Car Parking Reserves and is anticipated to be completed in late 2024.
The proximity of the new Civic Centre to the proposed Civic and State Square Masterplan will create clear synergy and establish an iconic public building set amongst the proposed central park and Council’s existing Civic Park Event Precinct.
